I am very excited to have the privilege of teaching Spanish for the seventh year at the Clintondale Elementary Schools for 2022-23. As we begin the school year, I would like to continue to expose students to the wonderful world of Spanish both in person and online. Students will have access to my collection of resources to assist in learning the language and culture of the Spanish speaking world through mrsdzwengspanish.weebly.com.
I visit each of CCS three elementary schools weekly. During this time, each class will receive 40 minutes of f2f class time.
Monday Charles McGlinnen Elementary
Tuesday Rainbow Elementary

Wednesday and Friday Robbie Parker Elementary
We are returning to our study of Spanish with TPRS, Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling with the fifth graders. This amazing method focuses on the use of the most commonly-used words and phrases and uses them in stories, conversations and other activities so that everything that is talked about in the language is understood by the students.
Grades K-4 will review the following units for about 6 weeks. Please note that we may add or delete items as time permits:
Where Spanish is spoken/Greetings (Los Saludos)/Hispanic Awareness Month

Behavior:
Our time together is very precious as we are meeting once a week. I expect all students to come into class quietly, prepared and ready to learn. There is no talking during my instruction; however, there will be opportunities to share information during the class at other times. When it is time for questions, students are expected to ask about anything they do not understand.
Requested Materials:
**Students in grades 2-5 are responsible for having a pencil (lapiz) during each class. Additionally, one folder will be provided for the school year for each student in grades 4-5 and must be carried into the weekly Spanish class. Students must keep folders at school.
Please bring in a box of tissue and sanitizing wipes for classroom use.
Bathroom Policy
Spanish is a Special class that meets for 40 minutes in each classroom location. The safety of our students is the number one concern. Oftentimes the bathroom is located outside of the Spanish classroom, therefore, students are unsupervised in the hallways. Additionally bathroom breaks can be disruptive to the learning. As a result, for the safety and well being, students are encouraged to use the bathroom before or after class or on an emergency basis only. Thank you for your support and cooperation in this delicate matter.
Please feel free to contact me anytime with any questions, comments, or concerns. Email is the best way to contact me. I will get back with you as soon as I can. I look forward to a great year!

Practice makes perfect, especially when learning a new language. Here are some additional activities to try on your own:
*keep a journal or make a poster of Spanish labels from packages. Posters may be put on display at school!
*Students may use Quizlet or put the Quizlet app on your IPod/IPad for studying.
*watch movies in Spanish and write recognizable words. You may check out your favorite DVD, it may have a Spanish setting that can be adjusted in the menu options.
* listen to Spanish in music as found on Pandora and/or Sirius radio and list the recognizable words.
*watch/listen to the news in Spanish. You may find many different apps including Univision as well as different Sirius radio stations.
*research topics of interest that relate to a Spanish speaking topic and reporting a fun fact is educational. Please write a few sentences describing the activity, what you like or dislike. Also, if you would like to try this activity please let me know where you found this fact, book, magazine, internet etc.
*Check out “You Tube” videos. Please see links below to get you started. Be sure to check with your parents first!!!!
